Destination Gippsland
Five things to do
Whether you’re driving east from Melbourne or south from Sydney, the Gippsland region of Victoria beckons this autumn. Stretching from Phillip Island to the Gippsland Lakes and Wilsons Promontory National Park, the region boasts great food and wines and plenty of attractions to explore.
1. Eat out: As a post-lockdown boost, the Victorian government has announced a $30 million statewide dining-voucher program. Eat out in regional Victoria and metropolitan local government areas outside the Melbourne CBD, and claim a 25% rebate (up to $125) of the meal value when spending a minimum of $40, from Monday to Thursday. For more information, visit dining.business.vic.gov.au.
2. Combine a ride through the country with a village foodie experience with the Gippsland Plains Rail Trail. This 63-km trail starts in Traralgon and winds its way to Stratford, with stops in Glengarry, Toongabbie, Cowwarr, Heyfield, Tinamba, Maffra and Apex Park. Try the Tinamba Hotel for a fine dining experience, or perhaps The Vines on Avon in Maffra for a wine tasting before you ride along.
