Made in the first lockdown, Zoom-séance flick Host was the pandemic movie. It was also, arguably, the horror film of the year, clocking in at just 57 minutes, but making an epic impact to land its British director Rob Savage a three-picture deal at US terror titans Blumhouse Productions.
Part of that deal was , a found-footage movie that Savage and his writer/producer partner Jed Shepherd had pitched around before . “It was very different [], ” says Savage from New Orleans, where he’s now, based on Stephen King’s terrifying short story in the collection. “It was still found-footage but much more traditional. And no one wanted it. And then, after , we just wanted to make something in the same way, with the same people, with the same energy, but with some more money! We kind of felt like we were on a bit of a roll, or at least on some crazy creative energy, having made so fast. We wanted to see if we could keep it going. And felt like it had enough DNA, and enough of something very different.”
