Contemporary photographs reveal February 19, 1928, was a bright, sunny day at High Beech in Epping Forest, ideal weather for what is generally held to be the first speedway meeting in England. Some 94 years later, and nine miles away, the elements were less favourable for the Celebration of Speedway marking that anniversary at the National Speedway Museum. With a pessimistic outlook (Storm Franklin ‘imminent’ in Shipping Forecast parlance) this did not bode well for those displaying bikes under the usual gazebos and foldaway shelters.
