Considering the effort and cost of producing your own vegetables, you may ask if it is worth the trouble or whether you should leave it to the professional growers who can produce and deliver with all the associated economies of scale.

However, when we think about the importance of eating simple, unprocessed organic food for our health, and consider that an estimated 33 percent of all food produced is lost or wasted, making up more than 50 percent of global landfill waste, the argument swings in favour of both knowing where our food comes from and understanding the process of growing it. Studies also show that eliminating global food waste would have the same effect as taking one in four cars off the road, saving 4.4 million tonnes of carbon dioxide pollution a year.
