Bruised sole

CAUSE: this is inflammation and haemorrhage of the solar (bottom) surface of the horse’s foot. Bruises in the sole can develop into subsolar abscesses. Bruised soles can be caused by excessive work on hard, uneven and stony ground, or as a result from incorrect fitting of shoes. Laminitis can also present with solar bruising.

DIAGNOSIS: horses present with lameness of varying degrees, and sometimes a red or brown colouration on the sole of their feet is visible, which is the bruising. There can be heat in the foot and an increased digital pulse. Horses may also react to hoof testers.

TREATMENT: horses should be rested and given pain relief. It can take two weeks for a bruised sole to heal.

avoid working the horse excessively if the ground is hard. Managing paddocks correctly is also important; harrow and roll when suitable to flatten uneven surfaces and remove
