Story of a LIFETIME
“It was a wonderful surprise,” says Mary Benger of winning the Public Garden category in this magazine’s 2021 Nation’s Favourite Gardens competition, run in conjunction with the National Garden Scheme. “I didn’t even realise that Burrow Farm had been nominated until I received the news that we had reached the shortlist!” A deserved winner, Burrow Farm in East Devon is Mary’s family home. It has been the focus of her energy and enthusiasm for more than 60 years and inspired her recently published book, A Compulsive Gardener.
One of the West Country’s most atmospheric gardens, Burrow Farm is a place of secret woodland glades, wildflower meadows, stone statues, trickling rills, herbaceous borders and sun-warmed lawns framed by ghostly narcissus, cowslips and fritillaries.
