It was supposed to be the perfect way to kickstart the Platinum Jubilee celebrations in the Commonwealth: an eight-day Caribbean extravaganza starring the House of Windsor’s dream team, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. Keen to shore up goodwill in the Caribbean and prove that the future of the monarchy was in safe hands, the royal couple’s glittering March tour of Belize, Jamaica and The Bahamas was choreographed to honour Her Majesty’s legacy with engagements inspired by previous tours made by the Queen and Prince Philip.

But it was this very notion of harking back to a colonial past, which for these nations was blighted by the scourge
