THANK you for publishing (March 30 issue) David Waugh’s excellent article on the problems now facing the population of the hyacinth macaw in the Brazilian Pantanal. It underlines the fact that good news stories relating to endangered species should not allow us to be complacent.

New threats can decimate populations in a very short period, as has happened worldwide (including in Australia) with many parrot species, after the catastrophic fires of recent times.
