Meningitis is caused by viral or bacterial infections, affecting anyone, but is most common in babies, young children, teenagers and young adults, especially people with reduced immunity. It can be serious if not treated quickly, can be fatal in 10% of cases, due to life-threatening blood poisoning (septicaemia), or can cause permanent damage to the brain
