ROBIN SADDLE HUT

The hut in question lies just outside of the boundary of the DOC takahe Special Permit Area and as such it is open to public access. This doesn’t mean that it’s straightforward getting there and acquiring a permit to pass through the SPA does allow you to take a more direct line and possibly save a bit of drama.

For those who don’t like getting permits, or during the months that the SPA is off limits entirely, Robin Saddle can be approached up the Irene River from George Sound, or from Lake Te Anau along the ridgeline from Lake Ione at the head
