Mecum Kissimmee
Mecum Auctions kicked off its 2022 season with a record-breaking Kissimmee sale in January. The 11-day event, held January 6-16 at the Osceola Heritage Park in Kissimmee, Florida, netted $217 million and a total of 3,500 cars crossed the block.
COVID-19 restrictions were still in place, but that didn’t dampen the enthusiasm of in-person bidders. The top earner of the auction was a 1965 Shelby G.T. 350R prototype, recognized as the most historically significant Shelby in the world. The car was driven by Ken Miles to claim its “Flying Mustang” moniker and sold for $3.75 million (all listed results include a buyer’s premium). A one-of-106-built 2020 McLaren Speedtail, with just 194 miles showing, landed in the second spot after selling for $3.3 million.
As with every Mecum auction there were a few notable standouts, and the 1951 Hirohata Mercury custom built by Sam and George Barris certainly fell into this category.
