THE CHAMPIONS LEAGUE
The Champions League as we now know it came into being in the 1992-1993 season, replacing the old European Cup, which was a two-legged straight knockout competition that had run from 1955. However, the last edition of European Cup did feature a group stage which saw the two group winners, Sampdoria and Barcelona, face off in the decider. The Catalans won 1-0 in extra-time thanks to a Ronald Koeman free-kick.
