ESTABLISHED in 1968, Galana Game and Ranching Ltd saw the introduction of a unique concept whereby a commercial ranching operation worked hand in hand with big game hunting over an area in excess of one-and-a-half million acres of undeveloped land in south east Kenya. This concession was bordered to the south by 17 miles of the Galana River with a common boundary of 54 miles with Tsavo National Park to the west. To the east it followed the boundaries of the old Coast hunting block 83 which reaches almost to the Indian Ocean.
Boran cattle were introduced; a primitive but disease-resistant breed, common to the nomadic tribes of east and north east Kenya. The objective was to cattle ranch in tandem with hunting of the big five and lesser game. The annual hunting quota was established with the assistance of the Kenya Game Department: 300 elephant, 6 black rhino, 6 lion, 12 leopard and 50 buffalo.
