Palms and Palm Sunday
We look at stories associated with the palm
THIS Sunday (10 April) Christians commemorate Palm Sunday, the last Sunday before Easter, and the first day of Holy Week. In many parts of the world, it has been customary to cover the path of someone thought worthy of the highest honour. In Christianity, Palm Sunday is celebrated by blessing and distributing palm branches, which represent the palms scattered by the crowds in front of Christ as he rode into Jerusalem. So I thought this was the ideal opportunity to take a look at the palms we grow in our gardens and homes, and to bring up one or two surprising facts about them.
■ Palms are mentioned frequently in both the Bible and the Quran. In Judaism, palms represent peace and plenty.
True palms
A TRUE palm is a plant in the Arecaceae plant family. There are hundreds of different genera and thousands of different species. Ninety-nine per cent of palms), the dwarf fan palm (), the Chilean wine palm () and the date palm ().
