You can only imagine how Paul Verhoeven’s eyes might’ve lit up when he came upon , a 1986 tome by historian Judith C. Brown that provides the factual basis for his latest provocation. Sex, religion and violence have been recurring themes in the Dutch director’s oeuvre, so the chance to cram them all into one lurid concoction must have seemed too good an opportunity to miss.
