The Ultimae Aventadors

IT HAD TO HAPPEN. LAMBORGHINI have introduced what will be the last series production naturally aspirated V12 supercars in their line-up, ever. And they’ve gone back to their previous nomenclature to sign them off.

The new Aventador LP780-4 Ultimae, or longitudinal posterior 780 CV and four-wheel drive (longitudinally mounted engine in the rear with 780 hp), is the most powerful iteration of Lambo’s natural goodness in a V12 supercar; with 10 hp more than even the SVJ and Centenario special and just a bit down on the Sian FK-37 hybrid.

Lamborghini’s unique, rigid, and lightweight carbon-fibre monocoque, with extensive use of carbon for the bodywork as well, contributes to a dry weight of just 1,550 kilograms. The coupé version weighs 25 kg less than the Aventador S and delivers a power-to-weight ratio of 503 hp/tonne. It can accelerate from zero to 100 km/h in 2.8 seconds and a top speed of 355 km/h. The peak torque of 720 Nm comes in at 6,750 rpm, with the massive power peaking at a heady 8,500 rpm. The optimized VVT (variable valve timing) and VIS (variable intake system) provide a better torque curve for improved driveability. Furthermore, the CCB (composite ceramic braking) system can bring it down from 100 km/h to standstill within just 30 metres.

The Ultimae’s electronic aids are managed by Lamborghini Dinamica Veicolo Attiva (LDVA) that processes real-time information on all axes of body motion via sensors. Even the ESC is calibrated for fast, precise traction control and vehicle dynamics, recognizing and adapting to differences in grip, including on low-grip surfaces. The permanent four-wheel-drive system and four-wheel steering are calibrated to allow more torque to the rear axle for sporty but safe oversteer characteristics with optimized lateral control.

Stephan Winkelmann, President and CEO of Automobili Lamborghini, said, ‘The Aventador LP780-4 denotes the final, purest, timeless naturally-aspirated production V12 Lamborghini. It delivers the essential 12-cylinder experience in terms of inimitable design, engineering solutions and the most emotive driving experience, and is the definitive Aventador concluding an extraordinary era. It is the last of its kind: it delivers the maximum power and conclusive performance expected from Lamborghini’s current V12 engine, combined with our inimitable flagship’s design DNA. The Aventador was destined to become a classic from launch and the Aventador LP780-4 is the most beautiful expression of timeless design and technical solutions in a final edition: Ultimae.’

Lamborghini will make 350 coupé and 250 roadster versions of the Aventador LP780-4 Ultimae. And from what we hear, the “Countach” name is making a comeback with an updated V12 powertrain.

IN ROAD CYCLING, A CLASSIC IS A RACE characterised by certain agreed elements such as a historic route, a particularly nasty set of hills or a road surface lined with cobbles. A Porsche 911 Sport Classic comes with a similar set of defined parameters
