can always say about Pixar, it’s that they’re not afraid to push boundaries. The boundary-shoving in , however, is staggering: this is a kids’ film that mentions, whisper it, . A worried mother (voiced by Sandra Oh) thinks that her daughter has locked herself in the bathroom because she’s got her first period, shouting through the door: “Did the red peony bloom?” Later, she’s shown waving sanitary towels in the air. This is jaw-dropping enough for Western audiences, and it remains to be seen if these moments get complained about, or even cut, in less accepting parts of the world. But it’s also mortifying for the teenage daughter in question… not least because she hasn’t got her first period at all. Nope: in a metaphorical display of scarlet shame that’s way more furry, she has actually morphed into a giant red panda.
