We used to make jokes about Ladas, but back in 1977 the Soviet manufacturer was two decades ahead of the curve with the Niva. Even today this boxy, diminutive car, designed to serve rural Russians in tricky terrain and a highly variable climate, is rated as one of the world’s alltime great off-roaders.
Here in the UK, despite inventing two of the most iconic 4x4s on the planet, we only really discovered the SUV in the mid-1990s. Outdoorsy types had been plying their trades in Land Rovers since 1948, and the tweed-clad echelons of society were enthusiastic users of the Range Rover from its 1970 launch, but despite the availability of Japanese SUV models such as Toyota’s Land Cruiser, the Suzuki Vitara and Daihatsu’s Sportrack, we had largely ignored them
