Here at Retro Gamer, one thing that we don’t understand is why more developers don’t try to do cute takes on popular genres. Given the success of Pokémon in the Japanese RPG realm and Splatoon in multiplayer third-person shooting, we’re surprised that nobody has tried to do a take on Grand Theft Auto, but with fairies borrowing unicorns rather than gangsters carjacking terrified civilians. Thankfully, shoot-’em-up developers are a sensible bunch and have realised that bold colours and a little sparkle go a long way – that’s why we have so many cute-’em-ups, and the enduring Cotton series by Success is one of the most memorable examples of the style.
