Podolski’s Polish homecoming

In one of the most interesting transfers of 2021, former Germany international Lukas Podolski made his dream move to Poland. By joining Gornik Zabrze, one of the most successful clubs in Polish history, he fulfilled a promise that he made to his grandmother Zofia.

“I will play the last game of my career for Gornik,” Podolski said after finalising the move in July.

Since then, Podolski’s impact on the pitch has been limited, but it has meant a lot to Gornik and the rest of the Polish league. Podolski played130 games for Germany and had a role in winning the 2014 World Cup, but he frequently mentions his Polish roots.
