Gunning NSW Here today Gunning tomorrow
My first encounter with Gunning happened 13 years ago when I was invited by my good friend Don and his son Matt to go on a train spotting weekend at Gunning in the Southern Tablelands of New South Wales. We spent many hours walking around the surrounding areas waiting for a train to come round the corner at Gunning, eagerly investigating the remains of the old railway yard and pondering what Gunning yard might have looked like in its heyday. Questions arose like; how many sidings were there? What infrastructure did they have? My fascination with Gunning grew more and more. I always had plans of building an Australian N scale prototypical layout that has the capability of being exhibited one day.
However, I had no concrete plans on what or where I wanted to model. Many locations were considered but some locations did not make the cut. There was a top five and now the process of elimination began. The track diagram of Gunning came out on top as it had all the requirements I wanted in a layout. The key requirements were a double track mainline station, with a yard that had the capability of being able to shunt trains. Gunning had ticked all the boxes.
