New-look TV

Your PC Probe, “Could the internet cope if all TV is IP?” (see issue 329, p12), made me wonder if we need to re-conceive how video is transmitted.

If you were designing the internet from scratch, you’d want to minimise the number of times each video is transmitted. If, say, ten people were watching the Euro 2020 final, you’d want the video transmitted once and people authorised to watch it would grab the single stream. Whether you could do that with existing network protocols is a separate question; maybe we need some new protocols.
