If Granny Rosieur’s cottage could talk, what fascinating tales it would have to tell. Built on the waterfront at Mill Bay, Mangōnui in the 1860s, over the years it’s seen waka and whaleboats superseded by fishing fleets and pleasure craft. The cottage, now called Mabel’s Cottage after Granny Rosieur’s granddaughter, is part of the Mill Bay heritage trail, a small self-guided tour that leads visitors around the Mill Bay waterfront to Silver Egg Road.
Silver Egg Road is named for an egg-shaped stone, painted silver, that an old-time resident relied on to help him find his way home at night. Having been stolen on one occasion,
