The documentation of history is invaluable—imagine the wonder of watching the grainy, black and white footage of the late Tunku Abdul Rahman, Malaysia’s first prime minister and founding father, standing upon the stage to declare the country’s independence in 1957. With his hand raised high, the emotion in his voice was loud and clear despite the old, weathered footage:
‘Merdeka!’
The crowd shouts alongside him excitedly; then, they stand as one as the snare drums begin to roll. The first-ever flag of Malaysia is raised, accompanied, the country’s national anthem, is sung for the very first time.
