The portraits show a portly old man, almost always wearing a beret over a bald head, eyes narrowed to slits and, risking his ire if he were still alive for this seemingly impertinent description, cuddly and huggable as someone’s grandpa. But what they do not show is the brilliance of this late literary luminary with his pen that always wrote beautifully as well as, once in a while, mercilessly.
