Why is social connection so important to you and your brand?
I finished my studies and started my label at 17 and can genuinely say that every friend I’ve made since then has been through markets and the maker community. As makers we’re here to back each other up through the hard times, and as small business owners we’re always supporting each other’s decisions and offering a helping hand. I also think customers become part of a community when they buy local. There’s a story they get to hear or a journey to follow that they’re instantly part of.
How do you cultivate your community?
When I opened my shop two years ago, I went from sewing alone in my home studio every day to going out into the world and meeting the people who had supported me for the previous nine years – and wow they were lovely! I started to crave more community and started social sewing classes as a ‘chatty’ alternative to classroom learning.
