DODGE 1962 THE NEW LEAN BREED

The first full line of Chrysler Corp. vehicles designed under the direction of Virgil Exner debuted in the fall of 1954 as the 1955 line. Advertised as the “100-Million Dollar Look,” the ’55 styling was entirely new and modern, with high-crowned rear fenders hinting at the tailfins that would be added for 1956.

After that rare, two-year styling cycle, along came the 1957 models with even taller rear appendages, available quad headlamps and bold bumper-grille designs that went through the 1957-’59 cycle. Another two-year cycle, 1960-’61, retained the previous greenhouse while totally restyling the main body. As Chryslers and De Sotos appeared with wilder fins that canted outward, Dodge and Plymouth began to draw back from that trend. Plymouths wore tall, sharp vertical fins for 1960.
