How essential is salt in your horse’s diet? Very!
t’s well known that there are times when more salt is needed. The average paddocked/stabled horse needs about 25g of salt a day in its diet, while a horse in very heavy training will need 4-times that. Now, point of clarification here! When I say about 25g of salt a day, I am referring to the total amount of salt (or equivalent) in the daily feed…not the amount of extra salt added to the diet. Salt is approximately 39% sodium and 61% chloride. The average paddocked/stabled horse needs about 10g of Na a day which equates to about 25g of salt. Consider how much sodium is in the complete diet, including pastures and grasses, before you start throwing in handfuls of salt from the produce store. Back
