Sunshine State Surprises
KISSIMMEE, Fla. _ Mecum Auctions’ 2022 Kissimmee sale, held Jan. 6-15, shattered records. Of the approximately 3,300 cars offered, 2,954 were declared sold. The auction boasted $217 million in sales — the highest total ever achieved at a single collector car auction, according to Mecum. The top sellers at this sale were generally performance cars, with the 1965 Shelby GT350R prototype once driven air-borne by Ken Miles topping the list at $3.75 million. It was followed by a 194-mile 2020 McLaren Speedtail, one of 106 built, that sold for $3.3 million.
There were surprises beyond the top sellers priced in the stratosphere. Several less-unique cars, often priced within reach of the average collector, also sold for bids that raised eyebrows.
