It’s hard to classify a company like Mecum Auctions as a “volume seller” of collectible vehicles in a destination location like Monterey. Yes, the Wisconsin-based company has been hosting a sale on the peninsula for years — always held just prior to the famed Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance a few miles away — and yes, it still bills its gavel action as “The Daytime Sale.” And yes, the three-day buffet delivers, on average, more than 450 cars, trucks, and motorcycles, in addition to a series of period automobilia. However, if Mecum has proven anything to buck the notion that the Monterey sale is a volume affair in the traditional sense, it’s what it brings to bidders: star consignments brimming with quality, in quantity.
To that point, Mecum’s 2022 Monterey sale packed a catalog with 478 entries, including everything from prewar motoring icons to supercar exotics from all eras. Those watching on television also might have noticed what may have been perceived as a slow start once the sale commenced on August 18, but by the time the last gavel fell on August 20, big numbers had been rolling in with regularity, led by a 1958 Ferrari 250 GT “Tour De France” Alloy Berlinetta, discussed in more detail elsewhere in this report,
