Kafue National Park is a big place. If you’re planning a safari there, dauntingly so. Zambia’s oldest national park, named after the river that forms its lifeblood, it sprawls across the west of the country for a full 22,500sq km, making it larger, for instance, than the Kruger, or the Serengeti and Maasai Mara combined.
Wildlife viewing in Kafue can be outstanding. Home to a gobsmacking 152 mammal species, this is one of the few safari destinations where you might realistically see – and I’ve personally encountered – the full suite of Africa’s five most impressive carnivores: lion, leopard, cheetah, spotted hyena and painted dog.
