THE B!G PICTURE: UNDERSTANDING A DESTINATION

Q WHAT MAKES A ‘GOOD’ SAFARI DESTINATION? WHAT COMBINATION OF FACTORS SHOULD WE BE LOOKING FOR?

For most first-time visitors to Africa, it’s about seeing lots of iconic wildlife (big cats, elephant, buffalo, rhino, giraffe, hippo, zebra, warthog and wildebeest) without requiring too many long flights and drives. Repeat visitors might have more specialised priorities – birding, or looking for rarer creatures such as wild dog – and they tend to favour quality sightings over quantity. If we can be picky, an ideal safari destination will offer the opportunity to supplement game drives with guided walks, canoeing, boat trips and other such activities.
