BOUT 27 MILES south of Nashville, the historic town of Franklin is growing rapidly, like many affluent bedroom ’burbs. Founded in 1799 by Abram Maury, the town is named for Ben, and has seen its share of prosperity and heartache. In the early 1800s, it was one of the richest counties in America, but this prosperity often came on the backs of slaves, and on Nov. 30, 1864, the Civil War ravaged the town.
