The overwhelming feeling of walking into the foyer of Second Stitch is one of generosity. There’s an abundance of light, space, thriving plant life and laughter. A hiss of steam from an iron and the rhythmic clattering of a dozen industrial sewing machines fill the air.
Founded by not-for-profit organisation VICSEG New Futures in 2017, Second Stitch is a sewing studio and teaching space in Melbourne’s north that offers alterations, products and production support. Set up as a social enterprise, it has a mission to economically and socially empower women from diverse backgrounds through sewing and textiles.
What began in a small corner of an empty studio space in Coburg has now flourished
