From its inception in the 1950s, scootering has generally been considered to be an activity dominated by men, but many women have also enjoyed the thrill of owning and riding their own scooter.

From the outset both Piaggio and Innocenti were keen to promote the advantages of their scooters over traditional motorcycles. The enclosed bodywork, no oily chains and better weather protection meant that clothes had less chance of becoming dirty or stained. While this was a benefit that applied to both sexes, the scooter’s step-through design also brought an unexpected bonus for women.
