Springtime. Just as the natural world is beginning to thaw out from the cold darkness of winter, so too is the cycling world. The off-season is already a distant memory for WorldTour pros, many of whom will have a tough spring Classics campaign on their race calendar, or a couple of week-long stage races to focus the mind and sharpen the legs.
The spring typically also sees the cycling of regular riders taken up a notch too, if not in intensity then at least in frequency and duration. Many don’t have the luxury of a smooth, steady reacquaintance with time in the saddle, though. Rather, it tends to be a case of being thrown in at the deep end.
Even if a turbo kept them moving in winter, the legs have lost their familiarity with the demands of real road riding and the weather does no one any favours either, being at its most unpredictable.
