HOW TO AVOID & TREAT BLISTERS

BLISTERS are a sure-fire way to transform your glorious hike into a painful, unpleasant slog. These infuriating fluid-filled bumps – which form between the upper layers of your skin to protect damaged skin and help it heal – are caused by rubbing and friction. This can either be skin-on-skin rubbing (such as abrasion between two toes), or friction between your feet and your socks and footwear.

Blisters most commonly occur around the toes, heels or soles, particularly if you suffer from ‘hot spots’ or ‘pinch-points’ whilst wearing your walking boots or trail shoes. These minor irritations will quickly become excruciating – a stinging, red-raw, inflamed mess – and, if
