‘I can see through the scruff and fluff’

IF you are looking to buy a horse, where do you go? The back pages of H&H of course; perhaps searching “horses for sale” online, or through word of mouth? There is another way.

Although it might seem old-fashioned, horse and pony sales still exist throughout the country and they attract horse lovers of all types – some there to buy, some simply looking for a day out with a difference.

“I was 12 when I first went to a Welsh horse and pony auction, and the atmosphere is something that you never forget,” says Natalie Wilson, who runs a showing yard. “There is usually something for everyone, from foals right through to top HOYS [Horse of the Year Show] standard ridden.”

Some might question why you would go to an auction rather than find a horse you like through a private seller but, says Natalie, “the benefit of the sale is that you get to see lots of the same type together and the best ones are easily chosen.
