THE NEXT SPECIAL ONE?

In two years as a top-flight manager, Amorim has won the League Cup at Braga, led Sporting to their first championship triumph in 19 years (in addition to winning the League Cup again) and steered the Lisbon club into the Champions League last 16 for only the second time in the club’s history. Not bad for a coach in his mid-30s taking baby steps in his new profession.

It is all the more remarkable when you consider that all of the above feats were achieved against the odds. Amorim got the better of traditional powerhouses Porto and Benfica despite working with an inferior squad. When you factor in the tumultuous situation in which the Lisbon club were mired when he was recruited, the turnaround Amorim has brought about is little short of a miracle.

And the evidence is compelling that his sensational start to life in the dugout is no flash in the pan. At the time of writing, Sporting are making a good fist of retaining the title and are going strong in all competitions as the final
