With her eclectic blend of rock, jazz and soul, London-based musician Nilüfer Yanya’s distinctive style is a reflection of her early years. The daughter of two visual artists, Nilüfer grew up playing classical piano and cello before picking up guitar, the instrument that would eventually become her song writing companion. After a slew of Soundcloud demos and self-released EPs, she became a critical darling with 2019’s Miss Universe, a concept album that cleverly critiques the wellness industry.
On her follow-up, , Nilüfer felt more comfortable bringing down the walls. There’s an unfiltered emotional honesty which permeates the record as she sings of homesickness, relationship breakdowns and life’s everyday mundanities. “I think with getting a bit older you start to be more honest about what you want from your life, and as a result admitting how you feel isn’t as big a deal,” she says of the album’s openness. “When you’re younger, it’s a massive thing where you go ‘I can’t believe I said that!’”
