A wine lover’s dilemma
bought a single bottle of Domaine de la Romanée Conti’s La Tache 1999 in 2005 for about £500. At the time it seemed like such an extravagance but it was a wine I had always wanted to try. I kept it in a wine fridge, taking it out regularly to hold the heavy bottle and imagine what it would taste like. As the years went by, the anticipation never faded and I decided to open articles about the stratospheric rise in value of DRC wines and other high-end Burgundies made me re-evaluate. After much deliberation, it was recently sold to a wine merchant for 10 times what I paid for it, and the proceeds used to buy five cases of Bordeaux in bond. So I never did get to try the legendary La Tache, but the excitement over all those years may have brought disappointment on opening – and what if it was corked?! I can’t believe that one bottle can give infinitely more pleasure than the 60 new bottles of Bordeaux, though the holy grail experience of tasting a DRC has sadly slipped away.
