The novel My Friend Flicka by Mary O’Hara was published in 1941. O’Hara had worked as a scriptwriter for silent-era films in Hollywood before she and her Swedish-born husband bought a ranch, in 1930 in Wyoming, where they bred horses. In summer, O’Hara ran a camp for boys from Eastern prep schools to help pay the bills.
Ultimately, she turned to her typewriter as a means of support during the Depression as it was difficult to make ends meet on the ranch. In her autobiography, O’Hara wrote, “When I told little.
