TUMBLE, by Joanna Preston (Otago University Press, $27.50)
ike the best collections of poetry, Joanna Preston’s has a wide range of references. The Australian-bred, Canterbury-resident poet draws upon European heritage, beliefs and mythology. “Fare” is a bleak, modernised reworking of John Keats’ “La Belle Dame sans Merci”. The Biblical Lucifer is a very polished collection by somebody who really knows what the craft of poetry entails.
