UNION CHAIN BRIDGE NOT VICTORIAN!

I note the interesting article in Old Glory 375 regarding the Union Chain Bridge across the Tweed near Paxton.
However someone seems to have fallen into the common journalist’s trap of describing all ‘old’ engineering as Victorian. The bridge dates to 1820, the year of the death of George III and the accession of George IV. We still had the reign of William IV before Victoria became queen.
Engineering did not suddenly arrive in 1837 with the start of Queen Victoria’s reign. Most of the foundations of modern engineering were laid during the time of the Hanoverian kings, the work of Richard Trevithick,
