USED BUYING GUIDES: Land Rover Discovery

LAND Rover can lay claim to producing some of the most influential SUVs ever made. The Range Rover of 1970 combined the brand’s world-famous off-road focus with a plush interior, offering a capable and practical alternative to many similarly priced saloons. By the eighties the Range Rover had already become the luxurious status symbol it is today, leaving Land Rover’s rudimentary 90 and 110 as the only entry-level option for family-car buyers.

The solution to this was the Land Rover Discovery, introduced in 1989. If the Range Rover was a jacked-up, off-road-capable alternative to a luxury saloon, then the Discovery was a practical estate, complete with the option of seven seats.

It was a huge success for Land Rover and became a major player in the early SUV boom – a time when buyers flocked
