There are many facets to the railway hobby. I’m a railway modeller. I have a compulsion to possess miniature models of the locomotives, trains and stations that I have enjoyed in full-size. I suspect I’m not alone in that, but I doubt that the majority of Steam World readers are also modellers, though no doubt some are. One of the great things about the ‘railway hobby’ is that there are, or were, so many different ways to enjoy it.
I was always fascinated by the places and the stations. To me, a lovely Cotswold town with a pretty station readers are unmoved by such things. There’s a page that I joined on Facebook, which covers BR coaching stock from the 1950s Mk 1 to the present Mk 5 vehicles. Occasionally there’s some interesting information on there but mostly it’s photographs of vehicles going for scrap or moving from one preservation centre to another. Most of the members, it seems, are obsessed by the numbers of these coaches. I can’t say it does much for me, or that I mourn the passing of the Mk 4 coaches on the East Coast Main Line which I always found to be characterless and uncomfortable.
