• Canvas board (or stretched canvas) 22x18in. (56x46cm)

Winsor & Newton Artisan water-mixable oils

• Titanium white; raw umber; raw sienna; burnt sienna; cadmium yellow pale; cerulean blue; cobalt blue; Prussian blue; permanent alizarin crimson; cadmium red pale and Payne’s grey

Winsor & Newton brushes

• Filbert (cat’s tongue) Nos. 10, 12 & 14

• Artisan Rounds Nos. 2, 6 & 12

Rosemary & Co brushes

• Ivory Short Flats Nos. 1 & 2

• Ivory Rigger No. 0

TOP TIPS

Foregrounds don’t need to have a lot of content to be interesting.

Lead-ins can be subtle as in this picture.

Rules can be broken or experimented with.

Prussian blue is an invaluable colour when it comes to painting very dark seawater.
