Glorious night scenes

Night-time provides a brilliant opportunity to go mad with lighting and colour and acrylics, which are opaque and can be layered, are a great medium for painting night scenes.

It’s best to establish the focal point straight away, especially with city scenes or harbours such as Newlyn Lights (above), because it’s easy to lose the anchor point in the painting with a mass of lighting noise! Make sure you have one spot that draws the eye a little more than the rest. Everything else should dance around and support that area.
