Leupold VX Freedom
IT might appear to be a straightforward question, but there is no simple answer. Like most questions to do with optics designed for hunting, the right scope for the keen hunter looking to make a 400 yard shot on a fallow buck is vastly different to the appropriate scope for shooting 1,000 yard steel targets.
The nimrod who takes pride in stalking his quarry and shoots big game inside 300 yards has no need of a big expensive scope equipped with all the bells and whistles like electronic gimmickry, or a mil-dot reticle. He is adequately catered for with a 3-9x40 scope having Duplex reticle.
Scopes always seem to increase in size. However, Leupold’s new VX-Freedom 4-12x40mm is relatively compact. It weighs 15.7 oz (445 grams) and measures a short 12.4 inches (315mm). The mounting area on the body tube is 5-1/2 inches (140mm) long which allows plenty of latitude to mount the scope on a rifle with a long action.
