It might well be the safest bet of the Olympic figure skating competition in Beijing.

Russian women have been the dominant force on the Grand Prix circuit this season. Skaters from that country won five of six Series events in the fall, the only exception being NHK Trophy in Japan, which had no Russian entries in the field.

A series of Russian women swept the podium at Skate Canada International and Rostelecom Cup and produced a pair of medals at each of the other three.

It stands to reason, then, that the Olympic champion is almost guaranteed to be someone
